The Government of Jamaica (GOJ) has recognized that the popularity and reputation of Jamaica and “things Jamaican” provide a great potential for marketing products, identified as quality goods based on their Jamaican origin.
The GOJ has also realized that implementing laws to protect Jamaican GIs can assist in maintaining the value of products unique to this country.
To this end, The Protection of Geographical Indications Act 2004 [1] was passed in 2004.
