Brief on Intellectual Property (IP) Week 2015
The Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO) will observe Intellectual Property Week from April 20th to 26th, 2015 under the theme “Creations of the Mind, Developing Humankind”. Intellectual Property Week is Jamaica’s celebrations surrounding World Intellectual Property Day (April 26) observed by JIPO’s international partner- the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)- celebrating innovation and creativity while promoting intellectual property’s role in fostering and encouraging them. WIPO’s focus this World IP Day is music with the theme “Get Up, Stand Up for Your Rights”, referring to words sung by reggae legend Bob Marley.
Intellectual Property Week is expected to increase the general understanding of what IP really means and offers an exciting chance to highlight, discuss and demonstrate how the IP system contributes to the flourishing of music and the arts and to driving the technological innovation that helps shape our world.
JIPO has planned a series of activities, commencing with the launch of the Geographical Indications logo coupled with an all-day exhibition of intellectual property documents and related products on Monday April 20 at JIPO’s Headquarters on Trafalgar Road. The week will also include two public fora – through seminars on applying for patents and designs on Tuesday April 21 as well as a day of Think Tank discussions on Thursday April 23 (World Book and Copyright Day) also to be held at JIPO Headquarters. JIPO staff will also be conducting public outreach activities throughout Kingston. The celebrations will culminate with the IP Week Church Service, to be held at 9:00 a.m. at the Garrison Chapel and the Jamaica Regiment Band will play, Sunday April 26, 2015.
The Jamaica Intellectual Property Office is an agency under the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce with a mission to establish and administer a modern and effective intellectual property system which will be a catalyst for international competitiveness, facilitating economic growth and national development.
